ISO 9001:2015…

The Centennial Edition!

I appreciate receiving emails with questions and/or comments from readers of this Newsletter… please continue to do so since it provides me with direction on where to aim the content of these publications.  In my last Newsletter (ISO 9001:2015 Newsletter Issue 99) we discussed the topic of  “Improve your process by thinking like a Customer!”, and now in this Newsletter we will discuss “The Centennial Edition!”.

The ISO 9001:2015 Element numbering…

Element 4 – Context of the organization
Element 5 – Leadership
Element 6 – Planning
Element 7 – Support
Element 8 – Operation
Element 9 – Performance evaluation
Element 10 – Improvement

The Centennial Edition!… So to be accurate, this isn’t really the 100th edition of my Newsletter.  In fact it’s more like my 290th publication since I have been writing these newsletters since way back to 1999… which was just prior to the biggest change that the ISO 9001 Standard went through in the year 2000.  That’s when the Standard shifted from “Quality Assurance – QA” to “Quality Management – QM”, which wasn’t really seen as a positive move by many companies.

As an aside, I began providing training and auditing services in 1992, back when ISO 9001 was in its 1987 original edition… I guess that means that next year it will be 30 years that I have worked in the field of ISO 9001… quite a shift from my formal education as a Civil Engineer from the University of Waterloo… I digress…

I only started numbering my Newsletters in 2015 when the Standard underwent another major revision.  Why am I telling you all this?  Basically to let you know that for over 21 years I have been trying to help others on how to interpret this Standard, by supplying a free monthly information service to those people who struggle with understanding what exactly this “vanilla” document is really saying… and to translate those generic words into what needs to be actually done in the field!

What’s coming NEXT for the ISO 9001 Standard?… As you may or may not know, the ISO committee in charge of revising the ISO 9001 Standard cannot make a change in less than 5 years from its last revised date… that would have been Sep/2020.  Obviously, no revision was published and at this time they are only just beginning the review process in 2021.  I will predict that the soonest we would see a change will be in 2023… and I also predict that it will be a minor tweak, similar to what happened in 2008.  I am suggesting that it will only be minor because that has been their pattern in the past… small change (in 1994), big change (in 2000), small change (in 2008), big change (in 2015)… plus they don’t want to rock the boat much more from what they did in 2015.

What type of changes will we see in 2023?  Too early to predict but again any changes will likely be minor in nature… but regardless, I will walk you through what those changes are when a formal draft is issued… along with what you will need to do to comply!

Be sure to watch for our next Newsletter issue where I will be answering some of the questions that I get from Readers of my Newsletters about how to implement the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 in a specific and practical way, that will also help improve business performance…

ISO 9001:2015 Internal Audit Outsourcing (we can do it for you OR with you!)

For cost effectiveness, the Internal Audit function can be outsourced to an external experienced auditor on a periodic basis. This will provide an independent and objective assessment to management, of where process issues may exist, along with identifying opportunities for improvement.  It will also provide the evidence needed to satisfy the Internal Audit requirements in the ISO Standards.  We have used two different approaches with this service: a) We conduct the entire audit ourselves, or b) We act as the lead auditor, and along with your Team of internal auditors, we complete the entire audit together.  This latter approach allows your people to receive guidance and direction from an experienced lead auditor while at the same time maintaining significant involvement in the internal audit process.

Internal Process Auditor Training for ISO 9001:2015

The two (2) day Internal Process Auditing for ISO 9001:2015 Training Session is focused on a process approach to auditing with the objective being not only to assess conformance of the quality management system, but also to uncover process improvements during an audit. This goes hand in hand with the process auditing requirements found within ISO 19011 and the process approach covered in ISO 9001:2015, which promotes continual process improvement throughout this Standard. An enhanced checklist is developed, and there will be workshops throughout, to reinforce learning, as well as a live, practice audit. If you are looking to meet the ISO 9001:2015 internal audit requirements and to “raise the bar” for your internal audit program then this is the course you should consider.
